Work experience

I have been interested in art and photography from an early age, but have had no formal training in either. Over the years and in the different places I have worked, I have captured scenes and sights that have interested me.

For my artwork I have used a variety of media - pencil sketches, water colour, oils and acrylic. Presently I work via my laptop using a variety of computer graphics programs and having the finished images printed on canvas.

For my photography I prefer black-and-white. I find that this, with its tonal subtleties, tends to encourage a sharper attention to the portrayed matter.

My wood turning came about by happenstance. My wife and I wanted to have a set of four matching jam jars for the breakfast table. We could not find exactly what we thought we wanted, so we bought four Stewart Crystal whiskey glasses and planned to have silver tops made. After a number of visits to silversmiths, it became apparent that even simple flat lids were rather more than we wished to spend. A friend had a wood turning lathe, and after several experiments, I managed to turn some quite acceptable lids..... and discovered that there was considerable pleasure, both artistic and practical, to be had in such work. I bought a lathe and carried on turning an ever-widening variety of items and taking on commissions for plates, salad bowls pens, pencils, letter openers and the like.
